WALTER J. TARANKO AWARD

LYNN MAYER

Old Town Elementary School

The Maine Association of School Libraries (MASL) is pleased to announce that Lynn Mayer has been awarded the Walter J. Taranko School Librarian Award for 2016.  The award is given to Librarians who have made a significant contribution to the school librarian profession on the local and/or state levels.

Lynn Mayer has been the Library Media Specialist at Old Town Elementary School since its inception in 2003.  She has ensured that the library information and technology skills are at the core of student learning and success at OTES.  The colleagues who nominated her remark about her ingenuity in ensuring the school has an up-to-date print and digital collection for students and staff.  She is very knowledgeable about the collection and is noted for finding the “right” material for student or staff needs.  She is on the school’s Technology Committee, is the “go-to” person for technology integration and is a recognized regional leader in digital citizenship. In addition to her direct classes, she works collaboratively with teachers in creating lessons for grade-level teams that will enhance the students’ information and technology skills.

Lynn's work goes beyond the wall of OTES.  Lynn has written several grants that focused on literacy.  One grant allowed an elementary school in the district to expand it print collection!  She coordinates with the librarians in the other schools in the district. Lynn is active in the University of Maine’s Author Camp, is a teacher consultant for the Maine Writing Project and is a member of the Chickadee Book selection. committee.  She was co-chair of the committee that revised the MASL Maine School Librarian Handbook. In addition to her plaque, MASL provided a cash donation to the school’s library and Lynn’s name will be added to the plaque of past awardees which is on display at the Maine State Library.

Lynn's presentation even made the news.  Check it out here!

Congratulations Lynn!
