MASL presents our third annual hybrid professional development event appropriate for all K-12 educators!
Misinformation persists in all areas of the information landscape. Math teachers have certainly shaken their heads at the use of manipulated data to sell a biased perspective. Science teachers cringe when they hear kids citing TikTok as a source about the Earth being flat. Health misinformation must be battled by our physical educators. And social studies? Well, we've all seen the way information has been weaponized in the political arena. The good news is that you do not have to fight this fight alone.
In this session you will learn about five distinct types of "fake news" and begin to recognize the motives behind misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation. You will learn how our own media habits, emotions, and cognitive biases can create stumbling blocks as we try to determine what is credible and reliable. Finally, you will explore instructional strategies and resources that can help you seamlessly fit media literacy education into your school day and how partnering with your school librarian can make your work even more impactful.
